Etymology tells us that ecology is the study of the house (OikoV = house; logoV = study) However, we need to define it.
The concept of ecology has had many definitions throughout history. Ernst Haeckel, who also coined the term ecology, defined as: "It is the study of the relations of organisms to their organic and inorganic environments" (1869). However, it is so broad that there is very little that would not be included in it. The definition appropriate existing today, and we might call "academic", is what defines it as "the scientific study of the interactions that regulate the distribution and abundance of organisms." (CJ Krebs, 1978).
